Understanding Solid Epoxy Flooring

Solid epoxy flooring is created by applying a colored epoxy base followed by a matching topcoat to achieve the desired color. The installation begins with thorough floor preparation and involves multiple steps such as repairing cracks, applying an epoxy moisture barrier, adding a decorative coat, and finishing with a polyaspartic topcoat. Unlike metallic epoxy flooring, which features metallic pigments and swirling patterns, or flake epoxy, which includes pigment chips or flakes, solid epoxy flooring offers a uniform, single-color finish.

Advantages Of Solid Epoxy Flooring

Solid epoxy flooring is a versatile option favored for its classic look, long-lasting strength, slip-resistant surface, and straightforward upkeep.

Easy Maintenance

Since solid epoxy is resistant to abrasion, chemicals, and moisture, it makes for a simplified cleaning routine. No more swiffering, mopping, or scrubbing day in and day out.

Timeless Appearance

Although certain varieties of epoxy can be eye-catching, solid epoxy offers a classic look that remains appealing regardless of shifting trends.

Non-Slip Surface

With solid epoxy floors, you can be confident that slips and falls are not a concern. Additionally, you have the option to test the slip resistance to guarantee it meets your desired safety standards.

Durable

Solid epoxy floors are extremely durable and long-lasting. They are resistant to impact, chemicals, and moisture, making them a top choice for high-traffic areas - whether that be your kids running around or heavy industrial machinery.

Solid flooring is anything but dull. Every tone is lively and striking, from classic dark gray and pure white to vibrant greens and blues. Explore some of our most sought-after solid colors below.

The Process of Installing Solid Epoxy Floors

At Northwest Epoxy, our flake epoxy flooring installation process involves precise steps for a perfect finished project. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how it all comes together:

Prepping the Floor

The installation begins with grinding 1/32nd of an inch off the floor. This allows small bumps for form, known as the profile, and acts as something our primer can stick to. Etching should never be used to prepare concrete for solid epoxy floors as it is ineffective.

Crack Repair

Before applying primer, we repair any cracks or divots in the concrete using an epoxy-based crack repair material.

Epoxy Moisture Vapor Barrier

After the prep is complete, it is time to prime. We will apply an Epoxy Water Vapor Barrier, which prevents moisture from entering and affecting the epoxy coating - it is extremely resistant to the presence of water vapor. You won’t find a tougher material than this water barrier primer.

Add Flakes

While your primer is still wet, we broadcast chips of paint color into it. We’ll put more chips than the epoxy can hold in order to create a full-bodied, cohesive color. Then, we’ll scrape in three different directions to give the floor the proper profile.

Top Coat

For the final step, we apply the top coat. For the top coat, we use the toughest Polyaspartic coat on the market - Tabor Test, ASTM # 4060. It is chemical resistant and durable enough to last in your garage, basement, or business for many, many years.
